BERLIN
(Reuters) – A German man drank too much, wet his bed and set fire to
his apartment while trying to dry his bedding, police in the western
town of Muelheim said Monday.

“He was too drunk to go to the
toilet,” said a police spokesman. “The next morning he put a
switched-on hairdryer on the bed to dry it and left the apartment.”
When the 60-year-old returned, his home and belongings were in flames.

Firemen eventually put out the blaze.

*It don’t pay to drink yall!  It just don’t pay!  Send an entry into the Darwin awards for this guy!*

SANTA
BARBARA, California (AP) — Sam, the dog whose ugliness earned him TV
appearances, limousine rides and even a meeting with millionaire Donald
Trump, has died, the Santa Barbara News-Press reported Tuesday.

The
pooch with the hairless body, crooked teeth and sparse tuft of hair
atop his knobby head died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday, said
his owner, Susie Lockheed.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be another Sam,” she said, adding wryly, “Some people would think that’s a good thing.” (Watch Sam’s bizarre gait and hear him howl — 3:04)

Sam
became an international celebrity after winning the ugliest animal
contest at the 2003 Sonoma-Marin Fair in California — a victory he
twice repeated. The purebred Chinese crested hairless made appearances
on TV in Japan, radio in New Zealand and in Britain’s Daily Mirror
tabloid, stayed in luxury hotels and met Trump on a talk show set.

Lockheed marketed his visage on T-shirts, a calendar and even a coffee “ugly mug.”

At the time of his death, Sam was scheduled to be filmed for a Discovery Channel series on the world’s ugliest species.

Lockheed
said she was initially terrified of Sam when she agreed to take him in
as a rescue six years ago on a 48-hour trial basis. Although she fell
in love with him, his appearance repulsed her then-boyfriend and
prompted the man to break up with her.

Later, however, Sam became
a matchmaker by bringing together Lockheed and her current beau, who
saw a picture of the two on an online dating site.

Lockheed said she had Sam euthanized after a veterinarian told her Sam’s heart was failing.

She
said she’s felt a little lost ever since, and is sleeping with Sam’s
favorite toy — a stuffed bear he picked up and carried home.

“I
have snuggled Sam under my blankets on my bed for six years,” said
Lockheed, who has three other dogs named TatorTot, TinkerBell and
PixieNoodle.

Fugitive hides in church, finds police praying

Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:09 AM ET

ROME
(Reuters) – A fugitive being chased by police in southern Italy Monday
gave them the slip by running into a church — only to find it occupied
by police officers who let him join the service before taking him to
jail.

Gilberto Antonio Carnoale, 48, had been wanted for escaping
from house arrest. Police were chasing him but he got away and dashed
into a church, where other police were attending mass. They recognized
him and arrested him, news agency Ansa said.

But before taking
him to jail, they honored his request to attend the rest of the mass in
the church in the small southern town of Soverato.

*Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord*

Fugitive murder suspect found – on TV

Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:08 AM ET

MOSCOW
(Reuters) – An eagle-eyed investigator’s wife ended a Russian manhunt
by spotting a murder suspect’s name in the credits of a television
show, a newspaper said Tuesday.

Attackers firebombed the house of
coastguard chief General Vitaly Gamov in 2002, in what officials have
said they believe was a contract killing ordered by the fishing mafia
on Sakhalin Island in Russia’s far east.

“We had already caught
two suspects and were under pressure to find the third,” an unnamed
source in the local prosecutor’s office told the Komsomolskaya Pravda
daily.

“Then the wife of one of the investigators was watching
this TV show. She decided to take a quick look at the credits … and
then she screamed, ‘Darling, isn’t that your man?’

“And as it turns out, it was.”

The newspaper said that Alexei Britov, now in custody, had been working on costumes for the show.

Contract killings are common in Russia and often remain unsolved.

*Uhm, dang.  Russia ain’t gonna be on my top ten travel list anytime soon*

MANILA
(Reuters) – Filipinos could have collectors’ items in their wallets
after a small number of 100-peso bills slipped into circulation with an
error in the president’s name.

The foul-up happened at a currency
printer in Europe, which was making the bills in time for the Christmas
spending spree in the Philippines, one central bank official told
Reuters on Monday.

On the front of the new 100-peso note, which
is worth about $1.83, the last name of President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo is spelled “Arrovo,” with a “v.”

“Those that are out
already are legal tender,” the central bank official said. “We’re not
releasing more of them. We’re having it investigated.”

The number of bills mistakenly released was “insignificant” and some people had returned them, she added.

The central bank “has apologized to the president over the incident,” Deputy Governor Amando Suratos said in a statement.

The
peso, often hurt by political uncertainty, has been one of the
best-performing currencies in Asia this year, hitting a six-month high
of 54.30 to the dollar last week
